(Giveaway!) Tis the Season for Winter Skin Care: 5 Ways to Prevent Dry, Flaky Skin this Winter

Posted on

It may not be winter yet, but those of us who are lucky enough to experience all the seasons know that with peppermint hot chocolate and cute faux furs come that dreaded winter skin - dry, scaly, flaky skin due to the colder, drier air. We're sharing tips today on how you can prevent that from happening, for healthy, glowy skin all season long!

1. Get a humidifier.

The worst offender for your skin this winter will be the dry air. Cold temperatures literally pull the moisture right out of the air, and right out of your skin. A humidifier restores that moisture back into the air, leaving your skin to reap the benefits of its hydrating benefits. Bonus Tip: If you're feeling a little under the weather, a few drops of peppermint essential oil into a warm mist humidifier can bring relief too!

2. Nutrition is key.

Foods with a high percentage of water will be your best friends this winter - think cucumbers and citrus fruits, which can hydrate you from the inside out. There are plenty of other foods as well that can help lock in moisture and give your skin the healthy glow it needs. We found a list here

3. Switch to oil cleansers.

Even if your skin is naturally oily, an oil-based cleanser can help to remove makeup before you wash your face with your normal cleanser, removing any excess oil and preventing your pores from getting clogged without stripping the good oils from your skin. Those good oils are going to be very important to keeping your skin looking great all season!

Our Skin Smoothing Cleansing Oil is perfect for all skin types. The rich, aloe vera based oil gently and effectively removes impurities and makeup without drying out your skin.

4. Say no to a hot bath.

We know, we know. The colder it gets, the more tempting it is to end the day with a long, luxurious soak. Mind the temperature of your baths and showers, as harsh, hot water can actually strip your skin of its ability to produce those good oils we were talking about, leaving your skin even drier and more irritated. Brief, lukewarm showers are best. Moisturize while your skin is still damp to seal in as much moisture as possible.

5. Last, but not least - moisturize!

We really can't say it enough. Moisturizing once your skin is dry makes it that much harder to retain moisture beyond just the surface of your skin. The key here is prevention. Moisturize at least every day - multiple times a day if you can! Stash bottles in your purse, at the office, and put it on whenever you get the chance!

Our Daily Essential Moisture Cream is specially formulated to moisturize the skin while simultaneously controlling excess oil.

Preventing winter skin is much easier than repairing it, so now is the best time to start implementing these tips so that your only worry this winter is how much eggnog is too much eggnog. (Spoiler alert: there's no such thing as too much eggnog.)

Happy winter!
